The new new year has brought good news for the AFM & Employers Pension Fund. In its first action in the 116th Congress, the House Ways and Means Committee introduced a bipartisan bill that would address the serious challenges faced by the AFM-EPF and other multi-employer pension funds.

Introduced by Rep. Richard Neal, D-MA, the newly minted chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, the Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act has a total of 10 sponsors, five from each party.

“We’ve got some difficult days ahead, but it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop … I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.” These prophetic words by Martin Luther King, Jr. were spoken in support for striking union workers less than 24 hours before his tragic assassination on April 4, 1968. The labor movement remembers his historic contribution.

Last year’s “Meet and Greet + Jam Session” Series held by Local 72-147 will be extended and expanded for 2019. Plans for new events to reach out to the Community are underway. Building upon a series of “lunchtime concerts” in Dallas’ Klyde Warren Park, featuring Local 72-147 Musicians, an event spotlighting local talent, bringing together the music community and providing a free community concert for the citizens of Dallas is in the works.
