Thomas Holmes
Thomas Franklin Holmes, known to those who loved him as “Tommy,” passed away peacefully on April 15th, surrounded by family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a loyal friend, and a solid Christian man who lived with purpose, humility, and heart. He was a Life Member of Local 72-147.
Born in Shamrock, Texas, August 22, 1936 to Lyle and Virginia Holmes, Tommy grew up with a deep appreciation for family, faith, and the outdoors. He pursued academic excellence, graduating from Rice University before earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Dental School. His commitment to continued learning led him to Boston University, where he completed a Master of Science in Dentistry (M.S.D.) in Periodontology.
Tommy proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force Dental Corp, embodying a quiet sense of duty and honor that was evident in every part of his life.
A true outdoorsman, Tommy had a lifelong love for golf, hunting, and fishing. One of his greatest personal achievements was earning the Grand Slam of North American Sheep, an extraordinary feat and a testament to his determination and respect for nature. Whether tracking game in the wilderness or swinging a club on the fairway, he was at home in God’s creation.
Tommy’s greatest pride was his family. He was a loving husband to his wife Dee, a supportive and encouraging father to his sons Craig and Lance (Suzy), and a joyful grandfather and great-grandfather to Garrett (Cayla), Claire, Luke, Grace, and Jack. His guidance, strength, and sense of humor will live on in them.
He is also survived by his brother, Jimmy Holmes (Kathy), and his sister, Gail Holmes Burdine (Alvie), along with many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. All who knew Tommy will remember his steady faith, his warm presence, and his ability to find joy in the simple, meaningful moments of life.
