DBDT Dancers protest unfair termination at August 16 Rally through performance with Local 72-147 Members

National Labor Relations Board Prepares to Issue Complaint Against Dallas Black Dance Theatre

The American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) reports that the NLRB has notified the Dallas Black Dance Theatre of its intent to issue a complaint and seek injunctive relief in court as a result of its firing of its dancers who decided to speak up together for better livelihoods and unionize through AGMA.

The dancers, backed in full solidarity by Local 72-147 and the entire labor movement of Dallas and Fort Worth, have been fighting back with a rally protesting the firing and auditioning of replacements, and have picketed performances by substitutes hired by management.

AGMA reports that in addition to the termination, the NLRB is considering “many other allegations of unlawful discrimination.”

The union has reached out to DBDT in the interest of settling the dispute and union members are prepared to meet with management. The complaint will proceed absent a settlement agreement with DBDT.

Members of Local 72-147 have participated in actions beginning with a rally on August16 and pickets of season opening performances at Moody Performance Hall on October 11-13. As a result of this public pressure, the Dallas City Council voted unanimously to pause a planned $250,000 grant to the non-profit so the city can conduct what one council member called a “reality check.”

Pickets are planned for upcoming DBDT’s performances on November 8 and 9. You may join in supporting these dancers by participating in these pickets. Let them know you will support them by registering below.
