Resolutions

I hope everyone has had a great holiday season, and a Happy New Year! As we tend to make New Years resolutions, I would like to put forth some resolutions for our local — resolutions we will keep!

Building on the beginnings of last year, we are set to move forward representing musicians and partnering with our community like never before. Last year, we held three events — Jam Sessions — where we reached out to members in the community to host events building our own internal relationships while reaching out to other musicians in our area. We held events in Dallas, Denton and Fort Worth. In beginning this initiative, we took the first steps in developing a new outreach, but achieved things that we had not expected, leading us to new avenues of potential. As a result, we now have partnerships with the community that we otherwise would not have. With the Greater Denton Arts Council for example, we now have a partner in reaching out to students preparing for their music careers at the University of North Texas. And with the Woodall Rogers Park Foundation (Klyde Warren Park), we have a partner in bringing musicians together and showcasing them to the city. (You will hear more about that soon!) With these new connections we are increasingly set up to foster the performing arts scene

Contact the White House and Congress and Tell Them to Fund the Government TODAY!

As the partial government shutdown that began on December 22 drags on, 800,000 federal workers are now feeling the pain of the political stalemate between the White House and Congress. Hundreds of our fellow union members are NOT receiving paychecks right here in Dallas/Fort Worth. Whether they are furloughed, or suffering mandatory work without pay, these are our brothers and sisters who are hurting the most through this shut down. This is how we can help

New Community Jam Session Planned for Dallas

Last year’s “Meet and Greet + Jam Session” Series held by Local 72-147 will be extended and expanded for 2019. Plans for new events to reach out to the Community are underway. Building upon a series of “lunchtime concerts” in Dallas’ Klyde Warren Park, featuring Local 72-147 Musicians, an event spotlighting local talent, bringing together the music community and providing a free community concert for the citizens of Dallas is in the works.

Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy for Labor Justice

In Dr. Kings final speech, he spoke for justice to Union workers. In providing aid and support to the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike, Dr. King had been to Memphis twice in the month leading up to this day: speaking a at rally before 15,000 people and returning for a march. When the march erupted in violence and had to be called off, King returned again to restore nonviolence to the movement.
