WHAT IS HUMAN MADE HUMAN PAID?
The HUMAN MADE, HUMAN PAID campaign is created by AFM, the labor union representing musicians across the U.S. and Canada, to champion musicians’ rights as Al technology impacts the music industry.
The AFM strongly believes in protecting musicians’ work. In an industry that is changing day by day, we PAID find it imperative to take a stance against unfair exploitation of musicians’ work. Under the SRLA (our union contract for all recordings made by major record labels in the U.S. and Canada), we receive fair compensation when our covered recordings are used for a new purpose. When anyone is exploiting our labor, under the SRLA, we get paid. It’s that simple.
WHAT ACTIONS ARE WE TAKING?
We are fighting for our rights in active negotiations with the major labels, in the courts, and in the halls of the U.S. Congress and Canadian Parliament. The AFM has filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group, Warner Records, and Atlantic Records for breaching our contract and failing to compensate musicians after licensing their vast recording catalogs to Al platforms Suno and Udio. We are liaising with arts communities and labor unions around the world to advocate for creators and amplify musicians’ rights. This campaign is one piece of our larger collective fight.
IS THIS CAMPAIGN ANTI-AI?
We are not here to fight technology or tools for music creation. Musicians are fighting back to champion the fundamental rights of creators. The future of music must belong to the people who make it—not corporate executives or tech companies seeking to monetize our labor without fair return.
